You thought you figured out your baby's schedule. And now she is teething! Dealing with teething can be hard on both of you. Luckily, teething toys can take away some discomfort your baby feels. That's why teething toys earned their space on our Montessori shelf.

When it comes to buying teething toys, consider a few things:

  • safe material (without defects, BPA free, avoid teethers that are gel or liquid-filled)

  • small size (easy for your baby to hold)

  • simplicity

  • offer your baby teethers from different materials such as wood or silicone (notice which material she prefers).

Here are some of Emma’s favorite teethers:

Sophie is a classic! Made of 100% natural rubber, it's the right size for your baby's hands. Your baby can chew on different parts of Sofie. Her legs reach far in your baby's mouth so she can massage gums in the whole mouth.

These two wooden teethers were with us since the beginning. I was able to take long showers while they occupied my baby. How? I hang one of them on Emma's bassinet for her to look at and later on to grasp. She was playing while I was enjoying my spa time. The baby gym is another place to hang these. Once your baby starts teething, your baby will begin using them as teethers.

This teether was Emma's favorite teether at 7 months old. Around this time, Emma's first two teeth came in. This teether rarely left her mouth those days. It's easy to hold and has a variety of textures that your baby can chew on.

If you prefer products made in the USA, this maple teether looks great.

Teethers do help your baby feel better during her waketime. But it can be hard to find something that works in the evening. When you get to the point when teethers won't do, try the following home remedy.

Natural Teething Remedy

  • Soak a clean washcloth in a bowl filled with fresh chamomile tea. Squeeze the extra tea out of the washcloth and fold it. Put the washcloth in the freezer. Take it out when your baby's tooth is breaking through the gums, and let her chew on it.

  • This home remedy worked great for us. It was the only thing that helped Emma to reduce her discomfort.

  • You can soak several washcloths at the same time, so they are available when you need them. Remember to place wax paper between them before freezing to prevent sticking together.
