We will make it! The baby doesn't look pissed at me all the time anymore. Thank God the first two months are over. It's actually fun being a mom. These new thoughts represented huge progress in my journey as a new first-time mom. Compared to the conversations I had with my husband when Emma was a newborn. Looking like zombie twins (sleep-deprived with bloodshot eyes and dark circles around them), one of us would ask: "Why do people have kids?" "I have no idea," responded the other while eating a teaspoon full of sugar to stay awake. Can you relate to any of these?

Luckily, life is getting easier with your 3 months old baby. She still loves to spend the majority of her time with you, listening to your voice. But she doesn't need you every single minute now. She will occupy herself practicing her movements in her movement area. If possible, lay her on a mat with a horizontal mirror next to it. That way, she can see herself when working hard on strengthening her muscles. Eventually, she will start rolling over.

Your baby is past her visual mobiles. Now she wants to touch and grasp. We will support her need and offer her various grasping toys. You can place her toys on her Montessori shelf (if you decide to use it). She won't get to her shelf yet, but she will begin to understand that those are her toys.

MONTESSORI toys FOR 3-6 MONTHS:

  • Baby gym with tactile mobiles (a ring on a ribbon, a bell on a ribbon) or tactile mobiles hung from the ceiling

  • Soft Book

    • A soft book provides your baby with the first introduction to books. Choose a simple book with realistic pictures if possible. This one looks fantastic.

On the shelf (from left to right):

  • Grasping wooden ball toy

    • This grasping toy is perfect for your baby’s little hands. I purchased this toy back in the Czech Republic. It was one of Emma’s favorite things to play with. You can find a similar one here.

  • Wooden clutching toy (around 6 months)

    • Emma showed her interest in this toy around 5 months old. This toy offered a different tactile experience than all the other grasping toys Emma used. Always look for variety when choosing toys.

  • Interlocking discs

    • Favorite grasping and teething toy that your baby can use later on for hand-to-hand transfer.

  • Rattles (Bell rattle, Crocheted rattle)

  • Basket with balls

    • Have a few balls of different sizes and materials available to your baby in the basket. The balls will provide many opportunities to play and explore. Emma’s favorite balls were the Takane ball and a rubber ball with protrusions (not pictured).

      • Takane ball - if there’s one ball I highly recommend, it’s the Takane ball. Not only can it be used for grasping and hand-to-hand transfer. You can hang the ball from a ceiling or a baby gym for your baby to bat with her hands or kick with her legs. Etsy carries a lot of handmade Takane balls.

      • Rubber ball with protrusions - this ball is perfect for teething babies. I found a yellow one that’s part of this set.

Others:

  • Basket with familiar objects from home

    • You can put together a basket of everyday items from home, for example, a few brushes (they have to be clean and safe for your baby’s mouth).

Note: Our shelf is here just for your inspiration. You don’t need all these toys, and your baby might not enjoy all of them. Observe your baby first and see what she needs and what she is interested in.

What are your baby’s favorite grasping toys? Please share them in the comments.
